PictureGet ready for Gutter Cleaning
With Summer here and soon to be gone, Fall is right around the Corner. Here is Some ideas from Innovative Glass 865.455.9871 to keep your Home ready for the colder temps.

Any deep cleaning you didn't get to this spring should probably be done this fall
  • Turning over your mattress and washing all of your bedding, including comforters and blankets.
  • Getting your carpets professionally cleaned. Think of all the sand and grass clippings that have been walked in on your flip-flops this summer.
  • Cleaning your windows, inside and out, including in between the sills.

  • Cleaning your house from top to bottom, focusing on public rooms such as the living room, family room, entryway and guest bath.
  • Get out the vacuum. Vacuum the drapes, window treatments, baseboards and in the corners. Move furniture and vacuum beneath and behind it. Vacuum upholstered furniture, or have professionally cleaned if needed. Pull the refrigerator away from the wall, and vacuum the condenser coils. For bottom-mounted coils, use a long, narrow brush to clean coils of dust and debris.

Before the chilly weather of fall begins, make sure your furnace is tuned up for the winter and change the filter. Before the chilly weather of fall begins, make sure your furnace is tuned up for the winter and change the filter, homeowners with a fireplace should check the flue and have the fireplace cleaned if it is wood burning.Fall is also a good time to have your air ducts cleaned

One of the BIGGEST must-do tasks of the season is to clean your home's gutters. If you don't clean out your gutters, you run the risk of water building up in them during cold weather. This can cause "ice damming," That will ruin a roof.

  • Examining your chimney for any damage
  • Covering up your air conditioning unit to protect it from ice and snow.
  • Putting away summer equipment, such as outdoor tables and chairs, umbrellas, grills and children's toys.
  • Touching up paint on and decks, trim and railings. Use a wire brush to remove flaking paint; prime bare wood first.
  • Draining and storing garden hoses, Install insulating covers on exterior spigots and have sprinkler systems blown free of water.
  • Inspecting washing machine hoses for bulges, cracks or splits. Replace them every other year.
  • Checking the dryer exhaust tube and vent for built-up lint, debris or birds' nests. Make sure the exterior vent door closes tightly when not in use.
If you have any questions about these, or would like to schedule Window Cleaning or gutter cleaning, feel free to call us any time!

What is Low-E glass!

4/19/2014

Picture
One common question I get while cleaning windows is what is Low-E Glass. We here at Innovative Glass 865.455.9871 will help you understand this.

Low-emissive (Low-E) glass is window glass that has been treated with an invisible metal or metallic oxide coating, creating a surface that reflects heat, while allowing light to pass through. Windows treated with Low-E coatings are proven to reduce energy consumption, decrease fading of fabrics, such as window treatments, and increase overall comfort in your home.
The heat that passes through your window glass is measured by the U-factor or ultraviolet light. The lower the U-factor the more energy-efficient your glass is. This type of light is produced by the sun and generates heat in your home. Too much of this heat, especially during summer, can cause your air conditioning bill to go up in an effort to keep your house cool. Low-E glass reduces the amount of ultraviolet light that enters your home, without blocking visible light.
Conversely, in winter, Low-E glass reduces the amount of heat lost through your windows from the inside of your home, keeping heating costs down. Depending on your home's heating and cooling needs, various types of Low-E glass have been developed to allow for high, medium or low solar gain.

In warmer climates, Low-E coating should be applied to the outside of window pane to keep the sun’s heat out. While in colder climates, Low-E coating should be applied to the inside window pane of glass to keep heat trapped in. This way, radiant heat is kept on the same side of the glass from which it originated. Keep in mind this coating is applied in between your double pane window and window cleaning will not effect it in anyway!!

Spring Time means New Mulch!

2/28/2014

PictureBlack Spots on Your home
New Mulch means Artillery Fungus!

Artillery Fungus is a problem. These spores of the genus "Sphaerobolus" will attach themselves to your Knoxville home siding and Windows. Though not harmful, it is a nuisance and, if left to set, the spores can cause permanent staining.

The artillery fungus, or shotgun fungus, is a wood-decay fungus that likes to live on moist
landscape mulch. The worst thing about this fungus is that it shoots spores up to 20 feet,
which often land on siding, cars and anything else that surrounds the mulch. It seems to
have become a serious problem this year for many homeowners here in East Tennessee.

Every year we have a lot of customers come in with this problem  Unfortunately no natural mulch can resist the artillery fungus – Penn State Plant Pathology department has tested 27 different kinds of mulch  and found that with enough time all of the mulches were supporting the evil spore-shooting mushroom.

As far as getting rid of the spores on your siding – that’s not a fun job. The most important
part is to get them quick, as they are covered in sticky substance that will stay on the
siding for good if not taken care of in a timely fashion. New vinyl siding that still has
an oily residue on it can be power-washed within the first week. In other cases pressure-washing
will be fruitless.  Scraping the spores off one-by-one with a scraper or steel wool is
tedious but effective. After that there will still be a stain left, which can be taken
care of with an ink eraser or possibly bleach.

No mulch is completely safe from the artillery fungus!

Keeping your Windows Cleaned Longer

2/22/2014

Picture
One of the Most common things I'm asked is How do I keep my Windows Shiny till the next cleaning with the crazy weather Knoxville gets this is a chore in itself, well Here at Innovative Glass, we've compiled the answer!

 For Your homes Exterior

If you have exterior mounted screens it is best to have them cleaned with your window cleaning.  Dust and pollen that gets trapped in the screen mesh will wash onto the glass during a rain shower.   During the winter when the windows are not opened, you can remove the screens and store them for the season.  In the warm months screens can be removed from the windows that are never opened.

Keep your barbeque grill at least 5 feet away from any windows or doorwalls.  This will stop splattering sauce, grease, smoke and oils from landing on your newly cleaned glass.

Keep trees and bushes trimmed away from the home.  Trees and bushes give off pollens that can gather on the glass just like dust.  Keeping them trimmed back away from the home will reduce the amount of pollen that will accumulate on the glass.

Keep your lawn sprinklers from watering the windows.  Windows that are in the path of a sprinkler system will get stained from mineral deposits.  These types of stains will eventually etch the glass and cause permanent damage.

Inside Your Home

Change your furnace air filters regularly.  Keeping the air filter clean in your heating/cooling system will reduce the amount of indoor airborne dust that would otherwise accumulate not only on your windows but your home furnishings as well.

Have your heating/cooling air ducts cleaned.  Cleaning the air ducts is especially helpful in new construction and newly remodeled homes.  Drywall dust from construction that has gathered inside of the ducts gets circulated throughout the home when the system runs.  Cleaning the ducts will eliminate this source of dust and keep both your home and windows cleaner longer.

And remember, rain does not make the windows dirty, dirt does. Dust accumulates on the outside of the glass from lawn mowers, leaf blowers, tree pollen, car exhaust and many other sources.  When it rains, the water droplets push the dust into different patterns and after the water dries the dust remains on the glass. This new “mud residue” is now highly visible because it is no longer uniformly settled.  Clean glass will stay clean after a rain because once the rain water dries, there is nothing left behind to obscure the view.
